Riders for a Cause: Solstice Century Raised $100K, Making a Difference for Local Organizations
The Solstice Century 100-mile ride, hosted by Zac Larson, is more than just a cycling event; it’s a testament to community spirit and the power of shared goals. Zac, a father of four, avid cyclist, and business owner, has spent the past six years inspiring many with his passion for biking. Despite hearing countless times, “Oh, I could never do that,” Zac saw an opportunity to encourage others to embrace the challenge and experience the profound impact such an accomplishment can have.
Driven by the desire to offer others the chance to push their limits, Zac created Solstice Century and the inaugural ride was held June 21, 2024. This event not only challenged participants physically but also fostered a sense of community and collective effort. Riders joined forces to support local charities, making a tangible difference in their community while forming lasting bonds and memories.
As a founding partner at IntentGen Financial, Zac embodies the principles of intentionality and generosity in every aspect of his life. Through his personal and professional endeavors, he motivates others to pursue their goals with dedication and heart. His commitment to supporting his community and encouraging personal growth is evident in every aspect of the Solstice Century.
Zac recently took the time to answer a few questions about many different aspects of the ride:
Q: Overall, how did the Solstice Century 100-mile ride fundraiser go this year?
A: This year's Solstice Century 100-mile ride fundraiser was a tremendous success, showcasing incredible community support. We had 38 riders, over 30 volunteers, and 120 attendees at the post-ride celebration event. In total, we raised over $100,000 for charity.
Q: Can you share some highlights from the event?
A: Nineteen riders completed the 100-mile challenge. Impressively, almost all of these riders surpassed their previous personal best distances on that day.
Q: What was your biggest challenge of the day as the organizer, and how did you overcome it?
A: One of the toughest challenges was encouraging people to take on the 100-mile ride. Despite extensive marketing through fitness and bike groups, as well as on social media, the most significant impact came from friends inviting friends. Additionally, maintaining health was crucial; out of over 40 registered riders, 5 had to withdraw due to injuries.
Training and staying healthy for such an event is difficult. The extreme heat, with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees that day, was another challenge. We provided plenty of cold drinks, rest stops, watermelon, and even an ice cream truck to help everyone get through the day.
Q: What was the overall fundraising total, and how will these funds impact the local charities?
A: The total amount raised was just over $100,000. The majority of these funds will be distributed among several community service organizations, including DuPage Pads, Loaves and Fishes, and Hesed House. Additionally, mental health services such as SamaraCare, Grow Wellness Foundation, and Max's Mission will also benefit. Six other organizations received funding from riders passionate about their missions.
Q: How did you pick these charities?
A: We chose these organizations because they perform vital work for everyone in our community. We wanted to undertake a physical challenge to support those facing real-life challenges daily.
Q: Do you have any notable stories or moments from participants during the ride?
A: We were inspired by several volunteers who had no prior connection to us or the organizations; they just wanted to help out. Watching participants step out of their comfort zones to take on both the biking and fundraising challenges was amazing. Most participants found it incredibly affirming when their friends, family, and colleagues supported or sponsored them.
This experience reinforced my belief that people are inherently generous; they often just need an invitation to participate. Solstice Century offered various ways for people to be part of something bigger than themselves.
Q: How did the community and volunteers contribute to the success of the event?
A: Five local companies sponsored the event, covering services, food, beverages, insurance, permits, and the event location, allowing all donated money to go directly to charity. Volunteers ensured the event ran smoothly and safely, enabling riders to focus on fundraising and pedaling despite the heat and challenging conditions.
Q: What feedback have you received from riders and volunteers about their experience?
A: Many experienced riders mentioned that this event was unlike any other they had participated in. They appreciated the format, which allowed them to return to a central location to socialize, rest, eat, drink, and re-energize. Many first-time participants have already committed to next year, aiming to increase their totals or complete the full 100 miles.
Q: How did the Solstice Century celebration in the evening go, and what was the response to the dinner and music?
A: The evening celebration was a highlight, held in the beautiful, shaded surroundings of Arranmore Farm and Polo Club. Billy Brick's pizza truck and music by Tres Moustache created a festive atmosphere. With drinks flowing and a celebratory mood, it was the perfect ending to an incredible 16-hour day.
Q: What are your plans or goals for next year’s Solstice Century ride?
A: Next year, we hope to have more riders and increased community and corporate support, with a goal of raising at least $150,000 for local charities. My company, IntentGen Financial Partners, supported this event because we believe in empowering people to live intentionally and generously. Partnering with them to manage their finances well makes investing in such events an easy decision. Solstice Century encourages people to embody both values. If more values-aligned individuals and companies join us next year, the potential impact could be tremendous.
